We need fresh blood--- um, people! Also we need MORE REFS!!!!
So... you want to be a rollergirl? You must be 19, have medical insurance, and a very good sense of humor. Flat track roller derby is a collision sport. This is not a joke. We have sent people to the emergency room.
We hold try-outs 4 times a year until our roster is full. Brush up your basic skating skills before coming to tryouts, you will need to show basic skating competency and forward crossovers to be accepted into our three month "Fresh Meat" training program. If you are practicing in the local rinks, a good goal is to be able to skate 20 laps in 5 minutes, staying to the outside of the rink (get to your favorite rink session early to get your laps in before the floor becomes lousy with speed bumps little kids). All skaters are expected to make at least 2 league practice sessons every week.
Sound like a lot of time? It is. Don't let that scare you off! It's a great way to drop that leftover baby fat and make new friends. We might even take ya out for a beer after practice to soothe the pain. Our "derby widows" have come to enjoy some quality man-time with the playstation after the kids are in bed and the wife is off at the rink every Thursday.
Our rink times are closed sessions and not open to the public. If you are serious about joining, you may come by and take a look at what you are getting into and talk to some of the girls while you are getting ready for try-outs.
