Got a message last week inviting me to ref at the WFTDA Western Regional Tournament hosted by the Houston Roller Derby in Houston, TX October 3 to 5, 2008. It's kind of a big deal. Last year Nigel Toughnails of DDG (now CRG) fame and my mentor was invited to ref Heartland Havoc. HH as it is known amongst the derby community was the 2007 eastern regional tournament.
I have to say it was a surprise to be invited. Less than 20 refs across the nation are invited. I am thrilled with this opportunity and what it means for the Green Country Roller Derby family. I promise to represent Green Country Roller Girls with pride.

Y'know, I've always seen you as my zebra-sister. We got our start with sister leagues, and we started around the same time. We're both had to overcome the misconceptions that come with being a female referee and rocking the colors like we do. We see eye to eye in the way we call things, and we trust each other implicitly on the track. We've grown up together as refs, and seeing you get such a vote of confidence on the national level is amazing. Knowing how much you deserve it is even better. I am so proud of you.
Oh, and I will have you know that in preparation for this weekend, I reprinted WFTDA 2.1.1 on DayGlo-colored paper, complete with a cheat sheet with rule citations for common points of bitching/contention (most notably 5.1.2, 5.3.2.2, 5.3.2.3, and 5.3.3) as the front page. I'll also be packing my most metallic hot pants of all -- the silver ones -- because we all know what will happen if I don't. ;)
aww shucks DayGlo,
