As I alluded to in yesterdays post. Grant and I spent the weekend racing up and down the east coast.
Friday we left the Hampton Roads area around 3:30 in hopes of making Annapolis by 8:00. Idea being that we would see Scottie and Andi. Scottie we did see. Andi we saw for a split second because she chose to be at the bar with her friends rather than see a friend she has only seen twice in the past 3 years. Priorities.
At 10PM we charged on to Easton MD where we arrived at 11:30PM to stay with Erin.
Up the next day 5AM. Crossing thru Delaware, New Jersey, New York, Connecticut, and Arriving in Boston Mass at 3PM to warm up and get ready for the bout.
The Girls from Boston were excellent host's and anticipated our every need. There were neat little baskets with fruit, nuts, and candy from the Derby Wives and Widowers group. They had neat little sandwiches and burgers in cardboard boxes and even catered to our vegan teammates. They were sponsored by Vitamin Water so we got oodles of the stuff to drink.
The floor was fast like Dorton but not as consistent. Fortunately there were no electrical cords this time to jump. The bleachers were close to the track, thus making effective outside pack reffing very difficult. Nigel made the trip up from Charlotte and Dale M was there too.
I have yet to work a bout anywhere other than Dominion where the ref side of things runs smoother. This makes me feel pretty good, because that means we are doing everything right. Over all reffing in other venues always involves adjustment, some more than others. This was my biggest adjustment to date. It was interesting to see how a totally different head ref does things. I took away from this many good ideas to use in the future.
The bout was highly physical and high in penalties as well. One girl even got 5 majors! (3&5 were insubordination to the referee's) It was a very interesting bout from a referee point of view.
Dominion lost to the Boston Derby Dames but they did put up a good fight. It was Boston 119 to Dominion 69. Boston was going into this seated at 18 nationally. So for Dominion's first WFTDA
The hotel they had us set up in was VERY nice. And the next morning we hopped in the car and headed back south. The drive back went smoothly until Dover. Dover and NASCAR. We finally made it back to the Beach around 8:30. Just in time to pick up a bloated dog (Sammie) from Lady Xanax and get home to feed the cats. All three of our four legged Children were happy to have us home.
